Patio CushionsYour patio bench is in dire need of a facelift, but the budget is not quite ready for the expense. So what’s holding you up? You can make your patio cushions yourself. All you are investing is a little sewing time and a little know how and you’re there. Measure the area you want to cushion. This measurement will ensure that you will have a cushion for the exact size you require. Pick out the thickness of foam you will need as a flat supported surface will need less thickness than a surface with wide boards. Make the pattern the same size as the foam. It is important to be accurate while measuring. The take from the seam allowance makes a snug fit on your cushion. Measure the width and length of your cushion at the top, then measure the distance around the edge of your cushion. Now you have to decide how long you want the zipper area. In the back, leave at least one to two inches of non zipper material. Remember that the longer you have the zipper the easier it will be to remove the cover. Using the top of your cushion dimension, length and width make perfect corners. It is a good idea to pin a note onto the piece saying “ cut two”. This is the top and bottom of your cushion. Now that you have decided your zipper length for your sidepiece, using your distance around the edge subtract the zipper measurement. Add 2 “ to this measurement for seam allowance where the straight strip will join the zipper area. Make a pattern piece the length you have measured by the thickness of the foam. Use the length of the zipper for the length of the pattern piece. For the width of the pattern piece use the side measurements subtract 3/4 of an inch. Divide this in two leaving a piece for each side. Sew all together and you have just made your own cushion cover. Remember to tell all your friends and you just may have your home based business.
