Patio Covers

Yardiac.com - The Ultimate Garden Center

There is a vast amount of patio covers on the market today. These covers can be made out of many materials, such as redwood, cedar, synthetic wood, vinyl, and aluminum to solid roofs to canvas awnings. Of course, out of all these, wood is the most popular. There are several reasons for this, one being that it is readily available and people love the look of wood. The disadvantages of wood are the maintenance and durability. With wood, a preservative should be applied within the first two years and then every three years after, depending on which direction your patio faces. In some cases, you would have to do this more often. If you decide that paint is what you want then you should get at least approximately 25 years out of it.

Just about any size of lumber can be used for the framing of patio covers. The most important thing is that you want to block out the sun and rain or have patio furniture that you don’t want to get wet. Often when you use a solid roof, it is reserved for part of the roof leaving the other part to enjoy the sun.

Vinyl and aluminum are popular also. The advantages of these products are they are maintenance free, which loosens up more time for you to be enjoying your patio. These products are also resistant to the surprises Mother Nature sends us. The thicker vinyl is more expensive, but will save you in the long run as it is longer wearing.

So go ahead and make your choice. It’s all there waiting for you, but remember that if you can’t do your own patio yourself there are tons of contractors out there waiting for your call. The only issue is if you do it yourself then you have earned the bragging rights to the work you’ve done and the neighbors will lavish compliments on you, then your pride will come to the surface and you will know it’s a job well done.
