How To Build a Deck

So you have no idea how to build a deck? This article will supply the steps to follow in building a simple deck, but no matter what size of deck you build the best thing you can do is become familiar with the types of building and materials that are available for decks.

Check your drainage and the grading of the land where you are putting your deck because you need to try to make this as level as possible. It will save you headaches as your project continues. If you have figured out where your footings will be, try to leave the ground undisturbed as footings need firm earth to lay on.

Nail or screw any beams in place at this time and then put in any extra bracing to give lots of support to your deck. Add any rim joints at this time and make sure they are square.

Attach the ledger to the structure with leg screws. If it doesn’t lay flat to the structure then remove the obstacles until your ledger is flat. Now you can install the flashing above the ledger to avoid leaks later on. Now you have to mark out the foundation, the footings and the post.

Cast your concrete footings in the ground, attach the concrete piers on the top to hold the post. You can pour the piers yourself or get them pre made. Give them a week to dry.

Get your post, making sure it’s longer than you need and attach it to the post anchor on top of a pier. Make sure you check the level of your work. Use a line level to mark the post so it is the same height as the bottom of your joist. If you put your joist directly on your post, mark it and cut your post. Now set your post in.

At one end of your ledger mark the location of your first joist, mark along the edge for every joist, transfer these markings to paper and then mark the beam on the opposite add joist hangers and put joist in place. Set the joist so the bowed side is up and don’t forget add blocking for added support.

Now is the time to set the placings for any added things you want to incorporate into your deck such as railings, benches, an overhead cover or lighting. You can complete your stairs now or wait until you have fully finished your deck.

The only thing left at this point is stain your deck, pull up a chair and admire your handy work.
