Deck Railing HeightA most important issue of decks is the deck railing height. This is something to pay very special attention to because if you don’t have the right information and go ahead and build your railings, it could mean that you will have to disassemble again and start over. If you are replacing old railings then the height should be no higher than 30 inches unless you can find the marking of the ones that you removed. The spindles should match the pervious ones also. The spindles should butt to the top and bottom of the railing. Spindles that are nailed to the sides of the top and bottom railing are not appropriate and should not be considered. Before you get started, take your plans to your city hall and ask questions to avoid future problems. They will tell you exactly what is expected and this will save you time in constructing the railings. Most city codes stipulate that railings have to be no less than 30 inches high with a space of no more than 6 inches between your spindles. Of course this depends if railings are required at all. If your deck is ground level they are not required, but you may want to add them for the visual beauty they lend. Deck railings can add so much to your property but if they are not placed in such a way as to compliment your surroundings they can become an unsightly mess. If you over build the height regardless of the code, it may not compliment your surroundings, so put some thought into what you want, stay within the codes that are there for you and you should end up with the perfect height and the perfect railings.
