Deck Railing DesignWhen looking for deck railing design you will be in for a treat. The number of different designs on the market today is overwhelming and beautiful. From the traditional wood railing to glass you can have it all. The Chippendale railing is a deck railing design that is a little more difficult than the standard spindles, but so much more worth it. The Chippendale works best with a post span of 3 to 7 feet. You will find the angle of the boards changes as the distance gets longer between the posts. You can use 2 x 2 or 2 x 4 for the inside pickets of this railing. To construct this railing, install the top and bottom rail from post to post. The height usually measures 36 inches off the deck floor. Start your railing pattern by installing a diagonal board from inside corner to corner. To get your board to fit perfectly, you can precut your board 3 inches longer than the measurement of the place where you are going to use it. Center this board in corners angles, then mark both ends and cut it. This should fit inside exactly. Nail into the position you want. Measure along this board and find the center point. The next board will cross at the middle of the one you just attached. Repeat the same procedure to make it fit properly. Use evenly spaced pickets to complete the railing. You still have to stay within the codes for your city when spacing these pickets. Measure each half of your X and divide it to have evenly spaced pickets to make the pickets measure each half of the X as before. The length is correct when they are parallel to the main X. Repeat these procedures until your railing is completed. You will enjoy the fact that you made the extra effort to make your railing with this design, especially when the neighbors start asking how you did it.
