If the deck is fairly high off the ground and often used for observing nature, one would want very strong, sturdy rails. Supposing the home owner has pets and young children that frequent the deck, safety is a necessity so a railing system that has very few small openings is a good idea.

Also, a wheelchair ramp is obviously a necessity if someone in the home happens to be disabled, but it is a good idea in any case because some visitors may find climbing stairs to be a difficult task.

To spruce up a deck, the adding of deck benches and furniture is a quality idea as it serves to make the space more inviting and functional if the deck is to be used as a dining area. Also the addition of planters and flowers is recommended as they bring some color and a sense of warmth to the deck. One might also want to consider some type of lighting for the deck, especially if the home owner is partial to entertaining in the evening.
