There are several important things you should consider when planning the installation of a deck. Deck designs should complement the design of your house and include features that reflect your lifestyle. The most crucial step in building a deck is the planning. A number of questions should be answered before proceeding with the construction process.

How is the deck to be used? If you entertain a lot then chances are you should take into account the number of people that will be using the deck and judge both its size and construction materials accordingly. Seating is another concern. You must consider the various types of deck benches and furniture that will provide the desired effect, whether it is small areas for tiny groups of people to talk or a large common area. Lighting is and additional feature that must be pondered over as entertaining in the evening will require some type of lighting.

Where should the deck be located? When designing a deck there are some limitations, especially when you think about the intended use for the deck. For example, if the deck is to be used for sunbathing then it would be wise to position the deck on the side of the household which receives the most afternoon sunlight. This may not seem possible in some cases as there would be no way the access the deck directly from the home, but keep in mind that you can add a door or build a walkway if necessary. Other location related choices often deal with such issues as privacy, noise limitation, and unwanted views.

What about legal building codes in the area? A permit will more than likely be required for any construction that is to be performed. Local zoning regulations may also govern the size of the deck, the distance from your property lines, its appearance, and the materials used. It is recommended that you check out the legalities before building begins. 

What size should the deck be? This should not only be considered when assessing the function of the deck, but also when determining the overall appearance of the outdoor living space. A small house accompanied with a large deck, and vice versa, often looks ridiculous. Decks should be designed in such a way that the home and outdoor area achieves complete harmony.
