Deck Building MaterialsThere are many kinds deck building materials on the market today, but for this purpose we will address the softwoods. The only question is which one to choose and you will find it will not be an easy decision. Redwood is the most popular of the woods for decks. This is due to its durability. A major advantage of Redwood is that it will remain straight and doesn’t need a lot of fasteners. Redwood is a harder wood to get as there are very few large redwood trees left so the producers have to rely on the young saplings for this product which is not as good as the bigger trees used to be which is the reason to treat the boards with a preservative after completing your project. Due to this lack of availability the price of redwood cost more than the other softwoods. Cedar is another one of the softwoods, which can be used on your deck. Cedar is ideal for high moisture climates. It comes in many colors and has an attractive grain. Cedar contains natural oils that help prevent rot and insect attack. It can be left untreated and will weather naturally from the elements or you can use a preservative on it to help to preserve the wood and keep it looking good. This wood has a dense cell structure, which restricts the chance of it shrinking or swelling. Pressure treated wood is very popular. This is some part due to the lower cost and the great product that it is. Pressure treated wood is already treated with various types of salt to prevent this wood from rotting. This type of wood comes in different grades whether you want to use it on the ground or on your deck. Decks built with this type of wood need a wood preservative or it will start to rot within a few years. Upkeep and preservatives will help to protect your investment.
