Deck and Patio Design

Deck and patio design involves starting with the area where you plan to build. You can choose to have a freestanding deck or have it attached to the house. The size you want to build depends on how you plan to use the area. If it is just a deck where you want to put a barbeque, you won’t need to have as large an area as you would if you want to spend a lot of time there and do a lot of entertaining. You will need to have some idea of the types of patio furniture you want on the deck and whether or not you want to build in a grill and have places for planters.

If you are building a pool deck, you will have to look at using concrete or paving stones. A pool deck is a great asset to your home and will increase the value of the home substantially. You have to choose the right material and design because these will determine the size of the deck and how much it will cost to build. The choice of materials includes the following:

  • Natural timber
  • Composite timber
  • Brick pavers
  • Granite tile
  • Poured concrete

Before you purchase the material you have to weigh the pros and cons of each one depending on where you live. The climate has a lot to do with your choice of material for a deck. For example, flagstone is not suited to warm climates and antique brick is not suited to colder climates.

Once you have decided on the type of deck or patio you want to build, you can draw up the design yourself. Many home improvement centers also have designs for decks and patios, and you can download free plans from Internet sites. You can also choose to purchase plans from many of these sites as well.
