Cost of Building a Deck

The cost of building a deck can be somewhat expensive. This often depends on a number of factors though, such as the type of wood used. Whether it is redwood, cedar or pine, the cost may vary depending on where you live. It may be cheaper to purchase the desired type of wood in another place as opposed to where you live. Local building regulations may govern the type of wood that is required for decks, so occasionally choice is just not possible. Checking local building codes is highly recommended.

Aside from the cost of building materials, many other expenses must be accounted for. If you decide to construct the deck yourself, thus saving on the cost of hired help, you may have to purchase some of the necessary tools. This can, in effect, get quite pricey depending on the size of your tool shed. Taking the alternative route and hiring a professional to do the job can be a wise investment especially if you have very little experience with carpentry work. If you have a friend or group of friends who have had work done by contractors, check with them to receive a few estimates and a gauge on the quality of their product.

When calculating a budget for the project, be sure to include the cost of not only building materials, tools or professional help, building permits, and any additional outside work, such as plumbing and wiring, but also the cost of making any changes to the initial plan. Roughly twenty percent of the total budget should be set aside to cover any changes. It is also wise to buy more material than is needed, as wastage is a common occurrence in construction of a deck. Also, in general, the more complicated your design, the more expensive it will likely cost.
