Building Decks

There are many decisions to consider when building decks. The key element is the deck plan which can be used right through the compete project. This can be done by drawing up a professional plan or scratching your ideas on a piece of paper. It will help you in getting the proper permits and materials needed for the project. Of course having a friend that is knowledgeable in building would help tremendously.

If you’re attaching the deck to your house, then you have to consider how you will do it and where you want it to go. You will need to know how many footings and posts you need and what size of beams you will need to span the post. You will need to know where to place them. The bigger the deck, the bigger each of these should be. The same applies to the joists you will be using. The bigger the joist, the closer you will have to space them for proper support. The deck boards come in various lengths and sizes and no matter what size you use, it will take the same amount of coverage to finish your deck.

You will have to decide on what kind of wood you want on your deck. Redwood, cedar, or pressure treated wood are the most popular, but your budget will determine what one you choose as they differ in price. They are all weather resistant and will end up a gray color when exposed to the weather.

You now have everything to start your project. Take your time, measure twice and cut once. For the novice builder, you may find it a bit confusing at first, but as you become more involved with the building and actually see how your deck is progressing, you will become more confident. Just imagine when you’re finished and invite the neighbors over for a barbecue! You can sit and listen to them talk of the wonderful job you did building your deck.
